UFC 314 Results: Alexander Volkanovski Makes History with Gritty Title Win Over Diego Lopes
Alexander Volkanovski is back on top of the featherweight division.
The 36-year-old Australian made history on Saturday night at UFC 314. He defeated Diego Lopes by unanimous decision (48-47, 49-46, 49-46) at the Kaseya Center in Miami. With the win, he recaptured the UFC featherweight title and became the first fighter under 155 pounds to win a UFC title after age 35.
Volkanovski also ended the first losing streak of his MMA career. He hadn’t fought since February 2024 after knockout losses to Islam Makhachev and Ilia Topuria. Many doubted if he could return to the top. He answered with grit, volume, and nonstop pace.
“A lot of people counted me out,” Volkanovski said. “The 35-year-old curse, 36 years old, big break — and I came back to beat a gun like Diego Lopes? This is the stuff people write books and make movies about.”
Volkanovski (27-4) set the tone early. He pushed the pace, landed sharp jabs, and scored a takedown followed by strong ground-and-pound. Lopes responded in the second round, dropping Volk with a clean right hand and opening a deep cut under his eye.
Lopes brought the power, but Volkanovski answered with precision and output. He out-landed Lopes 165-71 in total strikes and 158-63 in significant strikes. The fight was closer than the numbers suggest, but Volk’s consistency and control made the difference.
After the fight, Lopes (26-7) remained confident in his future:
“It was an honor to share the Octagon with a guy like Volkanovski. I’ll be back. I’ll train better, and I’ll be a champion.”
Volkanovski is now one of only two fighters to reclaim the featherweight title. The other is José Aldo. He also becomes the oldest UFC featherweight champion in history. His legendary status only grows.ight history to recapture the title after losing it. His legacy as one of the greatest to ever do it at 145 pounds is only growing stronger.
