Miami Open Champion Mensik Nearly Withdrew From Opening Match

In a thrilling final at the Miami Open, 19-year-old Czech tennis sensation Jakub Mensik defeated Novak Djokovic 2-0, securing his first ATP title and making history as the 9th youngest player to win a Masters 1000 tournament.

Mensik triumphed with a 7-6, 7-6 victory, not only claiming the coveted Masters 1000 title but also preventing Djokovic from reaching his milestone of 100 ATP titles. Before the tournament began, Mensik was ranked 54th in the world. However, in Miami, he showcased remarkable skill, particularly with his powerful serve that reached speeds of 130 mph. During the final, which lasted two hours and three minutes, Mensik fired 14 aces and only lost one serve.

What made Mensik’s victory even more remarkable was the fact that he almost had to withdraw from the tournament due to a knee injury. Just an hour before his opening match, Mensik was on the verge of signing a withdrawal form because of the excruciating pain in his knee.

“I owe so much to ATP physiotherapist Alejandro,” Mensik said. “An hour before my first match, I was ready to withdraw because of the pain. Luckily, the umpire was having lunch at the time, so I decided to get one final treatment. Alejandro worked his miracle, and thanks to him, I was able to step onto the court. If not for him, I wouldn’t be here today.”

After the match, Mensik expressed his gratitude to his idol, Novak Djokovic, who was instrumental in his journey into tennis. “Novak, everyone knows you are the reason I’m here today. I grew up watching you, and you inspired me to play tennis. There’s no greater challenge for a tennis player than beating you in a final. Thank you for everything you’ve done for this sport. You’re the greatest of all time.”

The victory was a poignant moment in Mensik’s career, not only because of the title but also the emotional embrace with Djokovic at the net after the match. With this remarkable triumph, Mensik has firmly established himself as a rising star in tennis, and his ranking surged to 23rd in the world following the tournament.
