De Bruyne Announces Departure
Kevin De Bruyne has confirmed that he will leave Manchester City at the end of the current season. The 33-year-old Belgian midfielder shared the news on Friday through a statement on his social media channels. However, he did not reveal any details about his future plans.
“I want to be direct and let you all know that these are my last months as a Manchester City player,” De Bruyne stated. He joined the club from Wolfsburg in August 2015 and has been a key figure in their success. “None of this is easy to write, but we all know as footballers that such a day will come,” he added.
A Legendary Career at Manchester City
During his nearly 10-year career at City, De Bruyne played 413 matches. He scored 106 goals and provided 174 assists. He was a standout player in the Premier League, winning the PFA Player of the Year twice, in 2020 and 2021.
In his farewell message, De Bruyne expressed his deep appreciation for the club and city that have become his home. “This city. This club. These people have given me EVERYTHING. I had no choice but to give EVERYTHING in return. And guess what? We won EVERYTHING!” he wrote. He also mentioned his wife Michèle and their three children, Suri, Rome, and Mason, sharing that Manchester will always be part of their family’s identity.
Trophy Haul and Impact
De Bruyne’s time at Manchester City was marked by numerous trophies. He won six Premier League titles, one UEFA Champions League, two FA Cups, five League Cups, three Community Shields, and one FIFA Club World Cup. His influence on the pitch, especially under Pep Guardiola, was immense.
From Chelsea to Manchester City
Before his time at City, De Bruyne had a difficult spell at Chelsea. He joined in 2012 but struggled to impress José Mourinho. After a successful loan at Werder Bremen, he moved to Wolfsburg in 2014, where his talent truly shone. His performances earned him a move to Manchester City in 2015. Under Guardiola, De Bruyne evolved into one of the world’s best players.
International Success with Belgium
De Bruyne also had a distinguished career with the Belgian national team. With 109 caps and 30 goals, he earned recognition as one of the top players of his generation. He finished third in the 2022 Ballon d’Or and has been named the Premier League’s top assist provider four times. He’s also frequently included in UEFA and Champions League teams of the season.
End of an Era
As his time at Manchester City draws to a close, De Bruyne could still leave on a high note. Although the Premier League title is likely out of reach and their European campaign ended early, City remains in the FA Cup semi-finals. They will face Nottingham Forest in the next round, giving De Bruyne the chance to add another trophy to his illustrious collection.
