Birmingham City Secures Promotion Amid City’s Waste Crisis
While piles of rubbish and rats continue to plague Birmingham’s streets due to an ongoing dispute with refuse collectors, the city’s football team is making headlines for all the right reasons.
Birmingham City FC has clinched promotion from League One to the Championship following a 2-1 victory over Peterborough United. The win puts them just one tier below the Premier League.
A Dominant Season with More to Come
This promotion has seemed inevitable for months. Now, the focus shifts to finishing the season as League One champions. Under the guidance of head coach Chris Davies, Birmingham are aiming to break the league’s points record. Three more wins from their final six matches would surpass Wolverhampton Wanderers’ 103-point record from the 2013-14 season.
This Sunday, they also have a chance to lift the EFL Trophy in a rematch against Peterborough at Wembley Stadium. Over 43,000 fans are expected to back the club in London.

After years of mismanagement and last season’s relegation, Birmingham’s revival isn’t a fairy tale—it’s a result of significant investment. The club has spent over £25 million on a squad many consider Championship-ready.
Among the minority shareholders is NFL legend Tom Brady. Though he owns just a 3.3% stake with no voting rights, he chairs an advisory board and supports Birmingham’s sports science department. Players even work with Brady’s personal trainer, Alex Guerrero.

Birmingham’s rise has not been universally welcomed. Their aggressive transfer strategy—such as poaching striker Alfie May from Charlton—and the high salaries offered to new signings ruffled feathers across the league.
Captain Krystian Bielik summed up the team’s confidence back in September:
“We’re in League One, but I don’t think there are any League One players in this squad. In six months, we’ll be a Championship team and a different animal.”
Despite the bravado, results back them up. The team has gone unbeaten at home and recently thrashed Barnsley 6-0 and Shrewsbury 4-0. Davies has loosened the team’s style in recent weeks, allowing for more attacking play.

Against Peterborough, goals from Alfie May and Taylor Gardner-Hickman secured the win. “We are going up” chants from 4,000 traveling supporters began in the 19th minute and never stopped. The celebrations were wild at the final whistle—and well deserved.
Davies remains focused despite the champagne flowing in the locker room.
“I think a few players had a swig, but we’ve got another game coming. I’ll enjoy a beer myself and reflect on a special season,” he told Sky Sports.
Looking Ahead: The Premier League in Sight?
Birmingham sees this as just the beginning. With stars like Christoph Klarer, Ethan Laird, Paik Seung-ho, and Jay Stansfield, the club is confident it can challenge for Premier League promotion next season. If loan deals for Rangers players Ben Davies and Kieran Dowell become permanent, they’ll add valuable experience.
Their narrow 3-2 loss to Newcastle in the FA Cup showed they can compete with top-tier clubs. Off the pitch, commercial partnerships and increased revenues will support another aggressive transfer window.
Knighthead co-founder Tom Wagner believes Birmingham can eventually reach the Premier League’s top 10. With Davies’ leadership and a motivated squad, the ambition no longer feels far-fetched.

Promotion with six games to spare is rare and underlines how dominant Birmingham has been. Their journey from League One embarrassment to Championship contenders is nearly complete.
